Hold on to your straw hat! Deep, down in the heart of
Texas lives a festival that is unmatched in length, heart, and talent. The Kerrville
Folk Festival (34 years running) hosts a number of shows and events, but one
such event towers the rest. This is the New Folk Competition.
Project Details:
In the heat of June '03, a two week stay saw us filming
in and around the Kerrville Folk Festival. The central focus was a competition
started in the mid- seventies, where 600 contestants are paired down to 32 finalists.
After these finalists sing their hearts out for two days, 6 are named New Folk
Winners. But this ain't no American Idol contest.
In a DVD
titled "A Song Like This" the spirit of the contest and the heart
of the festival
are captured forever. Rare, never-before-seen footage of the competition, and
the festival itself make this DVD a gem in the world of music movies. The one
disc feature includes interviews with a few of the winners, extra concert performances,
a slide show gallery, and a 22 minute documentary. As they say in Kerrville,
"it could be this way always."
